The ultimate cast- Stallone vs Rodriguez.

In one corner we have The Expendables, which has got to be the most highly anticipated action movie of 2010. Written, directed and starring Sylvester Stallone it's the story about a bunch of mercenaries trying to overthrow an evil dictator. The most exciting part of the movie is the incredible cast Stallone has managed to gather up, we have Stallone himself, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, 'Stone cold' Steve Austin, Eric Roberts, Cameo's from Arny and Bruce Willis and a certain direct to video hero, Dolph Lundgren which links us to Robert Rodriguez's Ultimate cast movie, which also has a straight to video hero in the shape of a mr Steven Seagal which for me is one of the the most exciting aspects of the movie as the guy has needed a break like this for years. Machete also stars acting legend Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez and of course Mr Danny Trejo himself. So which one has the ULTIMATE CAST and which one are you looking forward to the most? I find them both extremely exciting and cant wait for these movies to be released.

Kung Fu Legend David Carradine found dead.

This is such a shocking story as Mr. Carradine always seemed to have such a bubbly personality. The 72 year old star was filming a movie called 'Stretch' in Thailand and was found dead in a wardrobe with cord around his neck and other parts of his body. It is presumed that he may of committed suicide but no final verdict has been made yet.

I first came across Carradine as a child when i seeked out the cult classic movie Death Race 2000 and the Chuck Norris actioner Lone Wolf McQuade, i always enjoyed seeing him in movies and to many he was more of a B movie legend more than a main stream star.

It was great to see Quentin Tarantino revive his career in the outstanding Kill Bill in 2003, he was sensational.

It is such a shame that this has happened to such a great man and Actor, He will definitely be missed and it is very sad to think he will never be in a movie again. RIP.

Eminem recently got 'dissed' live on the MTV movie awards.

I don't know if this was planned or not but i do think it was highly uncalled for on Eminem's part. We see Sacha Baron Cohen's new gay character named 'Bruno' flying on wires with huge wings attatched to him during the ceremony and conveniently lands on Eminem when a 'default' with the wires occur, he lands on Eminem with his barely covered crotch in his face, the whole thing was obviously planned from the beginning but if Eminem and his party knew this was happening then they were very calm about it all and didn't let it get out of control.

Review-Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

Night at the Museum was a huge hit in 2006 and it was a fun movie. It had all the right elements, comedy, action, a great cast and a touch of romance. And with a Worldwide box-office of over 570 million dollars, a sequel was always going to happen.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian starts with Ben Stiller's character, Larry Davey, advertising his highly successful new brand of 'luminous' torch on a t.v show with George Foreman. Because you see Larry is now a successful inventor. But then Larry, upon a re-visit to his beloved Museum where he once worked, finds out that his favourite exhibits that come alive at night are being moved into storage at the Smithsonian Museum, away from the Egyptian tab that enables them to live their lives at night time.

So Larry disappointed by the news, plans to bring them back to the museum with his new found wealth and then try somehow to Linkbring some visitors back to breathe some life into the Museum and try to make it thrive again. Until the news is suddenly made even worse as Jedediah Smith, the miniature Cowboy played by Owen Wilson rings Larry unexpectedly to tell him that one of the monkey's has stolen the magical Egyptian Tab and has brought all the exhibits to life at the Smithsonian Museum and now Kahmunrah played with great comedic timing by Hank Azaria, has unleashed terror among the museum inhabitants and plans to wage war.

So Larry now must infiltrate the huge Smithsonian Museum and bring the tab and the exhibits back to the Museum where they belong with time against him as he must do all this before night fall, before all havoc breaks loose, but of course it isn't going to be that easy, otherwise their wouldn't be any point to the movie.

The movie didn't quite have the charm or magic as the original movie did and their wasn't really that many huge special effect moments considering the grandeur of the Museum. Ben Stiller to me looked bored and wasn't as funny as he was in the first movie, in fact most of the laughs come from the ever reliable Hank Azaria who is hilarious in one act of frustrated anger with Larry. There is also a '300' influenced moment where the miniature figures are unleashing war on the feet of the various soldiers in slow-motion and when we zoom out again into normal view all we see is people jumping around on one foot as they have been attacked by what would feel like nasty little pin pricks.

The rest of the cast do a decent job of what they are given and Ricky Gervais is once again very funny in the tiny appearances that he has.

Link
I was entertained during most of the movie and the kids will love it. An average kids summer Blockbuster. What i want to know is though, when are we going to get that zoolander sequel?

Another review of Basterds, this time it's quite plasent.

'Inglourious Basterds should delight Tarantino fans and irritate his detractors'

That's one caption from the review by the Guardian in the U.K. Nothing new there then.

I am still definitely looking forward to Inglourious Basterds, you can never have early assumptions on new Tarantino movie's because the reactions are always divided right down the middle, half think they are masterpieces and the other half think 'over indulgent', violent, no taste, blah, blah ,blah. At the very least, it is generating lot's of buzz among those lucky people at Cannes so the rest of will have to wait until August to voice our opinion's.

Check out the rest of the review here.

New clips from Terminator Salvation!

If you haven't already wet your appetite enough for the new Terminator movie then head over to MTV for some previously unseen footage by clicking here!

Guy Rithie's 'Sherlock Holmes' trailer hits the web.

Click on the image to watch the full trailer, it looks pretty cool, Robert Downy Jr. has that charming comedic timing about him and there looks to be some decent action. Lets hope it's at least better than 'RocknRolla'.

Top 10 biggest movies of 2009 (So far).

So we are almost half way through the year and with the summer Blockbuster season nearly among us, let's see which movie's have made the big bucks so far. I've no doubt the list will have changed dramatically within a few week's but let's have a look anyway.

1.Monsters Vs. Aliens- $190,733,766
2.Fast and Furious- $152,952,195
3.X-Men Origins: Wolverine- $150,993,169
4.Star Trek- $147,645,384
5.Paul Blart: Mall Cop- $146,081,053
6.Taken- $144,540,399
7.Watchmen- $107,453,620
8.He's Just Not That Into You- $93,894,308
9.Madea Goes to Jail- $90,508,336

10.Knowing- $78,836,466

So Dreamworks Monsters vs. Aliens still reigns supreme but with Star trek and Wolverine only being on release for a week or so they will easily surpass these numbers i think. And Tom Hanks Angels & Demons will make an appearance in the top half of the chart soon judging by it's strong opening. What do you think will take the number one spot of 2009? Will Terminator Salvation be huge? or what about Night at the museum 2? can it be as successful as the original Blockbuster? We'll have to wait and see what happens.

Will smith in fray to play James Bond.

Will Smith has joined the list of stars to become the first black James Bond and claims he is the best choice for the iconic spy role.

Rap star P. Diddy and Jaimie Fox have already forwarded their names as possible replacements for current Bond, Daniel Craig.

However the I am Legend Star is considered to be Linkthe most bankable star in showbiz and has claimed that he would be the best choice for producers.
Although P. Diddy probably already lives the closest life style of the smooth British Spy, it is very unlikely he would be considered to star as Bond in a big production movie. He even went as far as to do a James Bond themed advert for his latest perfume to give producers an idea of what he would look like as the famous spy.
I think it would be great to see the first black James Bond and i can imagine Will Smith fitting the role nicely. We'll have to wait and see what happens. What do you think, is Will Smith a good choice? who would you like to see as the next Bond?

Jean Claude Van Damme and Vinnie Jones team up for 'Weapon'.

Jean Claude and Jones will play rival assassins who have to form an 'alliance' to take down a drug cartel for the DEA, Van Damme's character will be a blade specialist while Jones will be a master sharpshooter. The rumours are that it will be directed by Russel Mulcahy from Highlander fame.

The plot doesn't sound original or particularly interesting but the pairing of these two men could be pretty cool.
I hope Van Damme's career continues to go in the right direction, i think he deserves another shot on the big screen. What do you think of the teaming of this pair in an action movie?

X- Men Origins: Wolverine

X-men Origins: Wolverine is directed by Gavin Hood and has an interesting cast including Liev Schrieber, Dominic Monaghen, Ryan Reynolds, Scott Adkins (if you don't recognise this name then look out for him in the future, he is a superb martial artist and an up and coming future action star) and Starring Hugh Jackman as Logan or if you prefer, Wolverine.

I was looking forward to this movie a lot, I have seen the X-men trilogy several times and i enjoyed them all thoroughly, including the third one, which seems to be the least favourite among the fan's. So it's fair to say that i had high expectation's.
The movie started of action packed with some exceptional war scenes. Just imagine Saving Private Ryan with wolverine on the front line! We get introduced to Logan's brother Victor, and some other mutants that are all part of a team that do battle together. Victor though, seems to have some issue's, he is excessively violent and lands the pair into trouble with his behaviour on occasion's. Logan after many year's, tires of this life style and and with another excessively violent moment by his brother, decides to leave the group and start a new life.

But unfortunately, early on in the movie we get a sense that Origins would not be up to par with the X-men movies. The special effects did not look as impressive and i thought the movie was over loaded with too many mutants/villains. There is however some stand out action scenes, highlighting, in particular, an exhilarating helicopter/motor bike chase.

I think what we get is a comic book adaption which would be entertaining to someone with no X-men knowledge and would suffice as a mindless summer Blockbuster. To the fans however, i would say a huge let down because their is such a following for this character, it could of been so much better but there is too much style over substance and it feels like more of a character spin-of than a prequel.

Not a travesty but certainly does not meet the expectation of a thorough super hero movie.

It's Dolph vs Stallone-round 2 !

J.C.V.D

Jean Claude Van Damme has been in direct to video hell for well over 10 year's now. It's been interesting to say the least. For every 3 bad movie's he released in the DVD market there was usually one, really good film there, in fact some of his dtv effort's are actually better than some of the main stream theatrical movie's he released back in the early to mid 90's, I'd take Wake of Death over Street Fighter any day. But no matter how much effort he put in, he just couldn't seem to get away from that bottom shelf of our local Blockbuster's.

Times change and so has Mr Van Damme himself. His latest offering simply titled J.C.V.D (which stands for Jean Claude Van Damme if you haven't figured it out already) is like nothing we have ever seen from the muscles from Brussels, for perhaps the first time in his career we see Jean Claude ACT! and he is brilliant. I do believe this has something to do with him being more comfortable in his native language though.
J.C.V.D is not your typical Van Damme movie, there is no long fight scenes, cheesy one liners are over the top explosions. It's more of a dramatic comedy where Jean Claude plays himself with great conviction, almost like a reenactment of his life. It shifts between fiction and fantasy and it doesn't matter if it is real or not because Van Damme makes it real with his performance. We see Van Damme return to his home town of Belgium to seek some peace and tranquility from the court battle with his wife over his estranged daughter but finds himself caught up in the middle of a bank hostage situation.
The highlight of the movie is a scene in which Van Damme has a touching and very personal monologue about his experiences and mistakes he has made throughout his life and career which is extremely powerful and moving. This scene has to be seen to be believed!

I don't think the movie will be to every one's taste, especially a lot of the Van Damme fan boys that would be expecting some action extravaganza. Although the movie is not perfect itself, it requires a lot of flashbacks in order to tell the story which at times can become slightly repetitive and boring.
J.C.V.D reveals itself to be an excellent surprise and should pave a new direction for Van Damme's career but we'll have to wait and see. Up next for Van Damme is The Eagle Path, Karate and a risky but unavoidable Universal Soldier sequel. finger's crossed.

The Dark Knight

After Christopher Nolan completely re-started the batman franchise again with the exceptional Batman Begins, many people where skeptical as to whether he could create a sequel that could live up to it's expectation. The hype was built up so much prior to release, We've seen Joker scavenger hunts and one of the largest advertising campaigns in history and it all culminated with the actual release of the movie.

What we get is a movie that far surpasses all the hype. A masterpiece. Gone are the day's of the camp cartoon-ish movies like the dreaded Batman and Robin. To start of with there is a cast to die for, Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman and of course the late and great Heath Ledgar. And each of these magnificent actor's does there characters justice.

Christian Bale was born to play Batman, He embodies the character, he brings to the character what the audience has never seen before, the flawed personality and his perception of justice which causes him to realise can he ever cleanse his tormented and fractured soul from the murder of his beloved parents, which is where Alfred(superbly played by Michael Caine), his butler or ally should we say is always there to keep him in check, to keep him grounded. But the real star of the show is the Joker, Batman's most deadly enemy and the most stand out performance of the whole movie by Heath Ledgar. He is EXCEPTIONAL. He steals every scene he is in and is breathtaking to watch, The Joker is sadistic, psychotic and ultimately scary. A terrorist.

I have never seen a more beautiful and breath taking movie, Exceptionally directed, polished performances, breathtaking action sequences, a fantastic story that will grip you, this movie really has everything. The darkest and greatest batman movie there ever has or will be. And the second largest grossing movie of all time. Rightly so.

The Wrestler

Every one is talking about the come-back of Mickey Rourke, and as triumphant and touching as his performance is, i just don't see this as a comeback, i mean he was great in Sin City and he has been in a few big movies since then so he was always there.

Anyway, Mickey Rourke plays Randy 'the ram' Robinson a wrestler who like Rourke had his hey day back in the 80's. The film starts with the ram receiving a paltry sum of money for his latest match only to discover that he has been locked out of his trailer home because he has run behind on his rent. We, the audience, cant help but immediately feel for him and we begin to discover how lonely he has become. He realises that he is getting older and may not be able to wrestle for much longer but wrestling is the only thing he is good at and in that ring is the only place where he feels alive.

We get a kind of behind the scenes look at the wrestling world, behind the glitz and fireworks and story lines ,we see men who thrive of the adrenaline from the audience and push their bodies to the limits each time they are in that ring, It's brutal. And the direction of these wrestling matches are superbly executed and Rourke's physical performance and look is outstanding.

It's a simple story but is brought magnificently to life by the performances that the director Darren Aronofsky managed to get from his actor's. Marisa Tomei as Cassidy is also on brilliant form and her character has parallels with Rourke's the Ram. She is an ageing stripper who also realises that her career is coming to an end but unlike the Ram she at least has some kind of plan as to where she wants to go with her life. the pair have a strange relationship through out the movie partly due to her rule of ''not getting involved with a customer'' but you just know that she cares for his well being.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, It feels so real and as a wrestling fan it made me respect these athletes so much more. A gritty, funny, touching and sometimes depressing, an excellent movie that i can highly recommend.

The Spirit

I really enjoyed Frank miller's Sin City, it may be the greatest graphic novel adaptation ever. And i think the reason it was so beautiful and original was thanks to Robert Rodriguez's passion and respect to the novel and Frank Miller himself, then followed 300, another Frank miller adaptation, an equally beautiful and breathtaking movie in which Zack Snyder directed in the same fashion. Both of these movies where HUGELY entertaining. I cant praise them enough.

But when Frank Miller took full hold of the directing reigns himself, well, oh dear. What we get in my opinion is a self absorbed mess. Boring and UN-original, compared to Sin City or 300 this movie comes across as a total farce, the movie is laughable for all the wrong reason's, It's as though all the passion and soul that was put into Sin City completely disappeared when making this film.

It has to be said the film itself actually is visually very impressive but that's the only thing i can say positively about this movie. The characters where extremely boring, in-particular Scarlett Johansen's counter part to Sam Jackson's 'The Octopus' character, it's as though Frank Miller fell asleep behind the camera when her scenes where shot and Sam Jackson, it has to be said has picked a terrible role, even though he tries his best with his scary voice and evil eyed stair that we have all grown to love over the years but inevitably just comes across as laughable, his cloned henchman are probably even more stupid and equally as irritating. And for The Spirit himself, played by Gabriel Macht, well he did pretty much all he could do given that the character himself was depicted with very little depth overall.

I was apprehensive about seeing this move in the cinema and in the end i decided to wait for the DVD release. And well, i wish I'd never even watched it at all. Its that bad. I had to sit and force myself to watch it. The credits where lovely though, it's a Shame they didn't put as much effort into the movie.

Max Payne

Max Payne, at times, is a some what striking looking movie and at some points is well directed. An adaptation of the popular video game and starring Mark Wahlberg as the police detective who sets out to find the killer of his wife and child but on the way he uncovers a conspiracy that could lead him to the killer.

Max payne may well boast a great tone, atmosphere and cinematography but pretty much fails in every other department, the acting was average and Mark Wahlberg himself looked bored, the movie was slow and boring and the action scenes where few and far between and when they did come along the slow motion seemed 'extra slow' as if to compensate for the time wasted building up to them.

A disappointing, boring and slow paced movie with some occasional great special effects and good looking action scenes. It's no wonder the movie flopped so badly.

The Strangers

We all know the plot. Young couple, isolated vacation home and boogey men with masks on. But yet there is something different about this 'Scary Movie', instead of relying on the blood and guts routine for the blood thirsty teen society of today, it instead focuses more on tension and suspense and it works very well.

The director Bryan Bertino wisely builds tension up to near-breaking point, until you are left in a near nervous wreck and you find yourself terrified by the simplest thing such as a man in mask popping his head through a door way. Both Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman do well in their leading roles and the Strangers themselves are pure terror and you cant help thinking to yourself why these people are seemingly terrifying this innocent couple for no apparent reason.

'The Strangers' premise is chillingly realistic and terrifyingly possible but is made slightly implausible as they can't possibly be human as they are made to be almost supernatural in their abilities. They appear and disappear seemingly at will.

This was still a good movie which started rather slowly but made up for it later on in the movie. One for the horror fans to look out for.

Crank: High Voltage

Crank: High Voltage takes place immediately after the events of the first movie, where we find Chev chelios (Jason Statham) on the ground after a fall from a helicopter and in reality should be dead. But this movie is called Crank and all realism is thrown out the window in what could possibly be the CRAZIEST movie of the year.

After the fall Mr. Chelios is quickly scooped up from the ground by some Chinese gangsters and is thrown into the back of a wagon. 3 months later Mr. Chelios awakens to see that Chinese black-market surgeons are slicing his famed "Chelios Heart" out and replacing it with some gross artificial heart that keeps pumping blood around his body due to the external battery pack that is connected but when the battery runs out of juice, he only has one hour before his artificial heart stops and he dies. So in order to stay alive he must keep it charged with regular volts of electricity using anything he can, including car power outlets, jump start leads or even stun gun's and power stations!

This film has a very convoluted plot, but like the first Crank, it does work out rather well. His priority is to track down the psychotic criminal Johnny Vang, who is seemingly parading around Chelios's heart in a miniature cooler, and get it back to his old friend and medical expert Doc Mileswhilst so he can put it back in, meanwhile Chelios is also being tracked by sadistic criminals sent by "El Huron", a crime lord who has some devious connections to Chelios and his past actions.

The movie does play for laughs a lot more than the first film which i think is to emphasize that the film doesn't take itself seriously which actually fits in nicely.

Overall i found this movie to be jaw dropping not only for the actions of which Chelios must take to stay alive but also the imagery and insane subtitles which are used through out the film.Completely crazy and very, very entertaining.

Fast and Furious

The first movie in the franchise, The Fast and the Furious was a sleeper hit back in 2001, directed by Rob Cohen and starring some relatively new talent including Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, Fast forward 8 year's and 2 poor sequels later ,2 fast 2 furious and Tokyo drift or something along those lines(i never watched it) and we have (in my opinion) the first true sequel to the original movie.

Fast and Furious starts of action packed literally straight away and the opening sequences were very impressive. Where the movie did lack was the plot. The plot is pretty thin . Vin diesel reprises his role as Dom Toretto who must seek revenge for the death of his girlfriend (Michelle Rodriguez) at the hands of brutal drug dealers led by Braga. This brings him face to face with the man who infiltrated his gang in the first flick, Brian O'Connor played by Paul walker (who reprises his role after ducking out of Tokyo drift), Who, would you know it, is now an F.B.I agent tracking those same drug dealers. So the pair team up. Mix some fast cars, great racing hot women and plenty of action and you have a very entertaining movie which i enjoyed thoroughly.

Rambo

My excitement for this movie was huge.Especially after sylvester stallones excellent return in Rocky balboa. The opening scenes gave me an indication of how brutal the movie would be.Rambo's presence was somewhat overwhelming as we havent seen him on the big screen for nearly 20 years and the over looking scenery of the jungles were beautiful ,the movie had a glossy crisp feel to it the direction was first class.
The story was simple,a group of voluntary workers want to help and give aid to the sick war torn victims in Burma but get caught by the Burmese army so Rambo is contacted and has to go up river along with a group of mercenaries to save the volunterary workers. I loved the fact that the mercenaries under estimated rambo and treat him as just the boat man to get them up river Until he bursts onto the scene and saves them from a brutal encounter.the film moved at a great pace and there was was plenty of explosions and violence to keep the action fans happy. It gives you a rather realistic and brutal view of what war in Burma may be like and the final 20 mins are just pure classic action and the ending is just fitting and pleasing.
