After Christopher Nolan completely re-started the batman franchise again with the exceptional Batman Begins, many people where skeptical as to whether he could create a sequel that could live up to it's expectation. The hype was built up so much prior to release, We've seen Joker scavenger hunts and one of the largest advertising campaigns in history and it all culminated with the actual release of the movie.
What we get is a movie that far surpasses all the hype. A masterpiece. Gone are the day's of the camp cartoon-ish movies like the dreaded Batman and Robin. To start of with there is a cast to die for, Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman and of course the late and great Heath Ledgar. And each of these magnificent actor's does there characters justice.
Christian Bale was born to play Batman, He embodies the character, he brings to the character what the audience has never seen before, the flawed personality and his perception of justice which causes him to realise can he ever cleanse his tormented and fractured soul from the murder of his beloved parents, which is where Alfred(superbly played by Michael Caine), his butler or ally should we say is always there to keep him in check, to keep him grounded. But the real star of the show is the Joker, Batman's most deadly enemy and the most stand out performance of the whole movie by Heath Ledgar. He is EXCEPTIONAL. He steals every scene he is in and is breathtaking to watch, The Joker is sadistic, psychotic and ultimately scary. A terrorist.
I have never seen a more beautiful and breath taking movie, Exceptionally directed, polished performances, breathtaking action sequences, a fantastic story that will grip you, this movie really has everything. The darkest and greatest batman movie there ever has or will be. And the second largest grossing movie of all time. Rightly so.
