The Spirit

I really enjoyed Frank miller's Sin City, it may be the greatest graphic novel adaptation ever. And i think the reason it was so beautiful and original was thanks to Robert Rodriguez's passion and respect to the novel and Frank Miller himself, then followed 300, another Frank miller adaptation, an equally beautiful and breathtaking movie in which Zack Snyder directed in the same fashion. Both of these movies where HUGELY entertaining. I cant praise them enough.

But when Frank Miller took full hold of the directing reigns himself, well, oh dear. What we get in my opinion is a self absorbed mess. Boring and UN-original, compared to Sin City or 300 this movie comes across as a total farce, the movie is laughable for all the wrong reason's, It's as though all the passion and soul that was put into Sin City completely disappeared when making this film.

It has to be said the film itself actually is visually very impressive but that's the only thing i can say positively about this movie. The characters where extremely boring, in-particular Scarlett Johansen's counter part to Sam Jackson's 'The Octopus' character, it's as though Frank Miller fell asleep behind the camera when her scenes where shot and Sam Jackson, it has to be said has picked a terrible role, even though he tries his best with his scary voice and evil eyed stair that we have all grown to love over the years but inevitably just comes across as laughable, his cloned henchman are probably even more stupid and equally as irritating. And for The Spirit himself, played by Gabriel Macht, well he did pretty much all he could do given that the character himself was depicted with very little depth overall.

I was apprehensive about seeing this move in the cinema and in the end i decided to wait for the DVD release. And well, i wish I'd never even watched it at all. Its that bad. I had to sit and force myself to watch it. The credits where lovely though, it's a Shame they didn't put as much effort into the movie.
